  • Theatrum Orbis Terrarium, widely considered to be the first modern atlas is published.  Latin for “Theatre of the World”, the atlas was created by Abraham Ortelius, Flemish/Netherlandish geographer.  The atlas contained 53 maps produced by 33 cartographers not including Ortelius himself.
