Every day, the number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases increases, along with the number of deaths and recoveries from the virus. There have been numbers maps created that track the total number of current coronavirus cases, of which the near-realtime COVID-19 map developed by Johns Hopkins University has been the overwhelmingly popular resource to use. What many of these mapping tools lack is the ability to see in detail a timeline of the virus’ spread. Researchers with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine have developed a mapping tool, the Covid 2019 tracker, that lets users scroll through a timeline and interactive map showing the novel coronavirus’ spread.
The novel coronavirus outbreak mapping tool provides straightforward tools that lets users scroll through an interactive timeline. Users can select any date from January 21 to the present to see the global situation of the COVID-19 outbreak. A play button will automatically scroll through each day of the timeline or a specific date can be selected. Two running graphs highlight new and cumulative cases of the coronavirus based on the date selected. Summary statistics also display total cases, number of deaths, and number of countries/territories affected based on the date selected. The accompanying map shows graduated circles based on the number of cases at the country level for the selected date. Hover over any country, and a mousetip displays summary statistics for that country for that date.
The map legend lets users toggle on and off past significant outbreaks: SARS, H1N1, and Ebola as a way to compare outbreaks for context. The coronavirus map is updated daily based on the World Health Organization’s situational reports.
The researchers have made the code and input data used to generate the Covid 2019 Shiny mapping tool available on Github.
