The Fortune 500 list that is produced each year by the economic magazine of the same title, is a list of the top companies in the United States based purely on revenue. The Fortune 500 list is a subset of the Fortune 1000 list.
Listed below are some geography statistics for the Fortune 500 list for 2015 by state. A more detailed analysis for the full Fortune 1000 list for 2015 is also available and is the Fortune 1000 list for 2016.
Geography of Fortune 500 Companies by State for 2015
There are 38 states plus the District of Columbia that have at least one Fortune 500 company headquartered within its boundaries.
In alphabetical order these states are: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Colu Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
New York tops the list with 55 companies, followed closely by Texas with 54, and California with 53.

There are 12 states that have no Fortune 500 companies headquartered: Montana, Maine, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Vermont, New Hampshire, West Virginia, New Mexico, Mississippi, Hawaii, and Alaska.
