How the evolution to electronic navigations systems has affected our experience of geographic knowledge is the subject of William Rankin’s recently published “After the Map: Cartography, Navigation, and the Transformation of Territory in the Twentieth Century” (GIS Lounge has previously briefly profiled Rankin’s World Population graph in the Spatial Unmapped article). Also the author of the Radical Geography site, Rankin’s new book is the result of over a decade of research and writing.
A bonus to this book is the companion site, www.afterthemap.info which offers access to all of the imagery, spreadsheets, and GIS data used in the book.  All GIS data is offered as zipped shapefiles.  Included data are various boundary and grid files (such as zones of the State Plane Coordinate System and Grid lines of the Universal Transverse Mercator system).
 Rankin also offers LORAN (long range navigation) GIS data.  In additional to GIS data, spreadsheets and images published in the book are also available.
