Map and GIS data competitions are a great way to promote geospatial work and receive industry recognition. Geospatial competitions range from both paper and digital map contests as well as contests designed to showcase the potential of different types of spatial data.

NACIS Student Map Competition
The North American Cartography Information Society (NACIS) is hosting its 24th annual map competition. Eligible students are invited to submit entries to either the print map and poster competition or the dynamic map competition. There are two categories for dynamic maps: individual projects and group projects. For the map and poster competition there are three categories: cartographic design quality and cartographic research quality.

RCMRD Map Competition 2023
25 countries in Africa are participating in the RCMRD Map Competition. Map entries can be any theme relating to “Environmental and Biodiversity Conservation Efforts.” There are three categories: school, professional, and overall winner.

Avenza Map Contest 2023
The Avenza Map Contest is inviting cartographers who have created maps using their software to submit entries. The top prize is a $500 USD Amazon gift card. Winning maps will be featured in the Avenza map gallery.

CaGIS Map Design Competition
The Cartography and Geographic Information Society hosts an annual competition for both student and professional competitors.
For both categories, the central aspect of the competition is design, meaning that the evaluation is grounded in cartographic design principles. These include elements like originality, textual accuracy (including spelling and grammar), harmony, coherence, visual prioritization, lucidity, effective use of color, and relevance of the subject matter.
