Tutorial: Introduction to Geospatial Analysis in R

If you missed the recently webinar entitled “Introduction to Geospatial Analysis in R” hosted by NASA and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) , you can catch the video and access the associated documents.  

Presented by Dr. Alison Boyer and Dr. Jessica Welch, both from ORNL, the webinar first introduces GIS datasets offered by ORNL’s Distributed Active Archive Center  (DAAC) which archives GIS data produced by NASA’s Terrestrial Ecology Program.  ORNL DAAC offers a web mapping interface for browsing and accessing the GIS data (https://webmap.ornl.gov/ogc).

After reviewing common geospatial operations used in R, the webinar then delves into using the Forest Carbon Stocks, Emissions, and Net Flux for CONUS dataset for the tutorial.  

The goal of the tutorial is to: “Examine carbon emissions from two disturbance types (fires and tree mortality due to insect damage) within three states: Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.”  This involves learning how to import data into R, select the area of interest from a raster file, extract and reclassify values from raster data, merge two raster datasets, and then make a map.
