How to Save a Selection as a New File Using QGIS

Learn how to save a selection from a GIS dataset to a new GIS file using QGIS with this quick video tutorial.

Saving a selection as a new file is a fairly straighforward process.  The steps outlined in this GIS video tutorial are:

First, choose how you want to select features from your dataset from the menu:

Next click on the GIS data set in the layers window that you will be selecting features from to highlight it.  Now make your selection by holding down the shift key and clicking on the features to highlight them.

Once the features have been selected, right click on your dataset and select the “save as” option from the menu.

From the interface select the desired file format.  Under encoding click the “Save only selected features” box.  Click “Browse”and designate the file name and location.

Click “OK” and your selection will now be listed as a new map layer.
